Jio Platforms is evaluating the development of a sovereign low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation for India, aiming to extend broadband services to rural and remote areas. The company plans to build a constellation of around 1,600-1,650 satellites to offer broadband and direct-to-device services, as revealed during Reliance Industries’ 49th annual general meeting, according to inc42.com.

Jio Platforms’ managing director Akash Ambani highlighted the potential to partner with leading global constellation providers by leasing satellite capacity to accelerate service availability while developing its own satellite capabilities. The company will also build ground stations across India to support both partner constellations and its future satellites, creating an end-to-end satellite broadband network.

This initiative aims to connect underserved regions such as hilly and mountainous villages, island geographies, and border outposts, addressing connectivity gaps in India. The move aligns with Jio’s broader strategy to build a satellite broadband network of global scale. The plan follows Jio’s recent launch of its AI arm, Reliance Intelligence, which is developing a large AI infrastructure platform powered by clean solar energy in Gujarat’s Kutch region.

Jio’s plan to deploy 1,600-1,650 LEO satellites positions it among the few companies globally pursuing sovereign satellite broadband networks. The company’s efforts to integrate satellite broadband with AI infrastructure reflect its ambition to enhance digital connectivity and technology capabilities across India.
