The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) recorded 10.65 billion Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions under the Unclassified category in September 2026, accounting for 44% of the total 24.07 billion transactions nationwide. This volume was down slightly from 10.88 billion unclassified transactions in August but marks a significant increase from 13% of total UPI volume in April 2023, according to medianama.com.
The Unclassified category includes transactions NPCI could not assign to any specific state and has not been redistributed among states. Maharashtra led among classified states with 2.36 billion UPI transactions in September, followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh with approximately 1.25 billion transactions each. Maharashtra’s transaction volume decreased from 2.39 billion in August and 1.97 billion in September 2025, per medianama.com.
In terms of transaction value, the Unclassified category reported Rs 11.48 lakh crore in September 2026, compared with Rs 2.73 lakh crore in Maharashtra, Rs 1.72 lakh crore in Karnataka, and Rs 1.51 lakh crore in Uttar Pradesh. The Unclassified value was Rs 11.62 lakh crore in August, indicating a slight decline. The high volume and value of unclassified transactions highlight challenges in state-wise allocation of UPI data, which is crucial for regional economic analysis and policy-making, medianama.com noted.
NPCI’s data for September 2026 underscores the growing dominance of UPI as a payment method in India, with total transactions reaching 24.07 billion. The next official state-wise UPI transaction report is expected with the October 2026 data release, which will provide further insights into the distribution of classified and unclassified transactions.
