Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, and Upstox have launched platforms allowing Indian retail investors to buy shares in up to 2,000 US-listed companies and around 1,000 ETFs. This move comes amid a 12.4% year-to-date drop in the Nifty 50 and a $33 billion foreign portfolio investor outflow from Indian equities in 2026, prompting investors to seek global diversification, according to inc42.com.
Zerodha’s Kite platform now offers fractional investing, same-day delivery, and systematic investment plans for US stocks. Investors can transfer funds to dollar-denominated wallets via net banking, though UPI and card payments are not yet available. The four brokers received approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority in June to provide international stock options from GIFT City. Prior to this, platforms like IND Money and HDFC Securities were popular for international investing.
This development allows Indian retail investors to hedge against domestic market volatility and diversify geographically by gaining access to global technology giants and other sectors. The entry of discount brokers into international markets follows a growing trend of retail investors seeking exposure beyond India. It also reflects a shift in the Indian investment landscape, where direct access to US stocks was previously limited to a few platforms.
The approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority in June enabled these brokers to offer US stock investments from GIFT City, marking a key regulatory milestone. Zerodha and its peers are now positioned to serve a growing demand for global investing options among Indian retail investors.
