The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has disconnected over 88 lakh mobile connections that failed mandatory re-verification, using an AI and big data analytics system. The move was confirmed by Union Minister of State for Communications Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. This action is part of efforts to combat telecom-enabled cyber fraud and improve network security.
The AI tool, named ASTR, is an in-house system developed by DoT that scans subscriber and usage patterns across networks to identify potentially fraudulent, forged, or non-compliant telecom connections. Connections flagged by ASTR are referred to telecom operators for re-verification, and those failing the process are disconnected. ASTR was introduced alongside the Sanchar Saathi portal in May 2023, which also includes the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) and the Know Your Mobile Connections feature.
The Sanchar Saathi initiative aims to enhance telecom security by blocking stolen or lost handsets and allowing subscribers to view all SIM cards issued in their name. The dedicated Sanchar Saathi mobile app, launched in January 2025 and available in multiple regional languages, has surpassed 46 lakh downloads. However, the initiative has faced controversy, including a November 2025 DoT order mandating handset makers to preload the app on devices.
The disconnection of over 88 lakh mobile connections using the ASTR AI tool highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to tighten telecom security. The Sanchar Saathi app and related reforms continue to be central to these measures, with the app’s widespread adoption reflecting increasing user engagement with telecom security features.
