Agnikul partners with Finland’s ICEYE to build radar satellites in India

Chennai-based space startup Agnikul Cosmos has partnered with Finnish synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite company ICEYE to build and launch radar satellites from India.

Chennai-based space startup Agnikul Cosmos has partnered with Finnish synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite company ICEYE to build and launch radar satellites from India. The collaboration, announced this week, aims to reduce dependence on foreign launch providers for strategic missions and position India as a regional manufacturing hub for ICEYE’s global satellite constellation, according to livemint.com.

Founded in 2017 and incubated at IIT Madras, Agnikul Cosmos specializes in developing orbital launch vehicles for small satellites. The partnership with ICEYE involves joint development and manufacturing efforts to produce SAR satellites domestically. This initiative will enable the deployment of radar satellites capable of all-weather Earth observation, enhancing India’s capabilities in space technology and satellite manufacturing.

The deal underscores India’s growing role in the global space sector, particularly in small satellite launches and manufacturing. ICEYE operates a constellation of SAR satellites providing high-resolution radar imagery, and this collaboration will expand its footprint in Asia. Agnikul’s expertise in launch vehicles complements ICEYE’s satellite technology, creating a strategic synergy that could reduce costs and improve access to space for regional customers.

The partnership marks a significant step toward self-reliance in satellite manufacturing and launch services in India. Agnikul Cosmos and ICEYE plan to begin production and launch activities within the next year, aiming to contribute to India’s space ambitions and ICEYE’s constellation expansion.
