BigBasket to cut operations to 40 cities amid rising losses

BigBasket plans to reduce its geographical presence from 76 cities to 40, focusing on profitable markets, according to inc42.com.

BigBasket plans to reduce its geographical presence from 76 cities to 40, focusing on profitable markets, according to inc42.com. The move comes as the Tata Digital-owned grocery platform faces mounting losses, with a 42% increase to ₹2,006.8 crore in FY25. The company’s operating revenue also declined 2% to ₹9,866.7 crore in the same period.

The decision follows the appointment of CEO Amit Nanda, who has been tasked with steering BigBasket toward profitability. The company will concentrate on larger cities with higher population density and quick commerce usage, adopting a cluster strategy to improve profitability. Nanda is prioritizing customer experience, pricing, assortment, and faster decision-making to enhance accountability and execution, inc42.com reported.

BigBasket’s retrenchment reflects intensifying competition in the quick commerce sector, where rivals are expanding dark store density and scaling operations aggressively. Despite being founded in 2011 and backed by Tata Digital, BigBasket has struggled to keep pace, leading to reprimands from Tata Sons chairman Noel Tata over its high cash burn. The company has yet to file its FY26 financial statements.

BigBasket’s FY25 financials reveal losses of ₹2,006.8 crore and operating revenue of ₹9,866.7 crore, marking a critical juncture as it narrows its focus to 40 cities. The company has not publicly commented on the restructuring plan as of now, according to inc42.com.
